HDR images

An exaggerated HDR of the Apartment building I manage

So, I've been doing a lot of fooling around with this new camera of mine (the Canon Rebel T1i). When I say mine, what I really mean is ours, referring to Kelly and I, but for the sake of this blog post, I will refer to the camera as 'mine'.

I absolutely love this thing. I never knew I would enjoy photography as much as I am right now. It has been over 3 months since we've owned the camera, and I still notice myself picking out camera angles, and thinking about what photo-lens would look best, for different images I see in my daily activities!

And then, to top all of it off, a friend of mine pointed out a different camera technique. It's called HDR (High Dynamic Range). In a nutshell, regular photographs do not have the full range of contrast or exposure that our eyes do. When you look out a window, you can see what is inside the room you are in, and whatever is outside the window. Even a great camera and lens cannot capture the full range of light that our eyes can, it will pick up either the 'overexposed' inside of the room, with a light spot as the window, or an 'underexposed' window, with clear content, and a dark room. What an HDR image does, is it layers 3 images on top of each other, masking the dark from the underexposed, and the light from the overexposed, mixing and matching that with the exposure in the middle.

So, now I'm trying my hand at these HDR images, and they look AMAZING if they're done right. I'm still trying to get my head around what type of images should be HDR and what images should be regular. To test it off, I took a couple images of the apartment building I manage.

This image was the most realistic, but still kept the HDR format.
I will do my best to upload some more. I should be off to Lake Louise for an evening next week. I hope to get some beautiful HDR mountain shots, if the weather holds true!
